What To Expect
Nikko Toshogu Shrine | Splendid architectural beauty and a sacred place dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu
Nikko Toshogu Shrine is a shrine located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, and is a mausoleum that enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate, as a god.
In 1999, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Nikko Shrines and Temples, and is visited by many worshippers and tourists from both Japan and abroad.
The pinnacle of Edo architecture combining authority and beauty
After Ieyasu's death, Nikko Toshogu Shrine was ordered by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, to undergo extensive reconstruction, resulting in the gorgeous and magnificent architectural style we see today, decorated in brilliant colors.
The approximately 50 shrine buildings are intricately carved down to the smallest detail, making this a space that showcases the best of traditional Japanese architecture.
A collection of sculptures and famous places to see
• Yomeimon Gate
A symbol of beauty representing Japan. There are so many things to see that it is also called "Higurashimon" (the gate of the sun setting), and each sculpture has a deep meaning.
• Three Wise Monkeys
The famous sculpture "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" is one scene in a series of stories that depict human growth and convey the importance of education for children.
• Sleeping Cat
This sculpture is said to have been made by the master craftsman Hidari Jingoro. Behind this cat, which is considered a symbol of peace, there are also carvings of sparrows playing, embodying the ideal of a world without war.
A sacred space where nature and history come together in harmony
The approach to the shrine is surrounded by cedar trees, and the atmosphere changes as you climb the stone steps, making it a special experience to be in a sacred space. It is also known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn leaves in the fall, so you can enjoy the shrine along with the natural beauty of the four seasons.
Nikko Toshogu Shrine is not just a tourist destination, but a place where you can experience Japan's history and spiritual culture on a deeper level.
Come and see its beauty and grandeur with your own eyes.
