What To Expect
Enryaku-ji Temple, the main temple of the Tendai Sect, was built in 788 to protect the ghost gate of Heian Kyo. Mount Hiei spans Kyoto City and Otsu City, with an altitude of 848 meters. The existing temple was built from the 14th to the 17th century. It is also the temple where eminent monks such as Horan, Shinran, Eisai, Dogen, and Nichiren, who became the founders of various schools of Japanese Buddhism, once practiced here. Enryaku-ji Temple is still used as a place of spiritual practice, and the atmosphere inside the temple is very peaceful. The vast temple is dotted with majestic temples such as the Nedo-chanden (a national treasure), the Grand Lecture Hall, Shakya-den, and Yokokawa-chuden. The Lecture Hall and Sakyamuni Hall are important and precious cultural properties. One of Kyoto's World Cultural Heritage Sites.Many highly respected monks have appeared here. The long history and splendid culture have made Mount Hiei continue to flourish. In fact, Enryaku Temple represents Mount Hiei. It is the natural landscape in the mountain, the temple monks and those devout believers formed Enryaku Temple and created its Buddhist culture. Enryakuji Temple can be roughly divided into three major areas.First of all, the East Tower is the birthplace of Mount Hiei. There are many important temples and temples, among which the main nave is particularly representative. Then there is the West Pagoda, located 1 km north of the East Pagoda. There is the ancient building Sakyamuni Hall in the mountain, and the elegant landscape also exudes a solemn atmosphere. Behind is Yokokawa, located 4 kilometers north of West Tower. The Buddhist hall located in the middle is called "Yokokawa Nakado" and was founded by Ennin.
